The Way of the Sword — discipline, respect, and the spirit of Budo
The Sacramento Kendo Dojo is a nonprofit organization and a member dojo of the Northern California Kendo Federation (NCKF), headquartered at the former Buddhist Church of Florin building.
The Sacramento Kendo Dojo was founded in 1967 and moved to the former Buddhist Church of Florin building in 1982 — the same grounds where our temple community has gathered for over a century.
In November 2023, the dojo officially changed its name from Sacramento Kendo Club to Sacramento Kendo Dojo. Same dojo, same spirit, a new name that better reflects the tradition of the art.
Members of the Kendo Dojo assist with food bazaar preparations each quarter and frequently perform during the summer Obon festivities, making them an integral part of the BCF community.
Kendo, “the way of the sword,” is a modern Japanese martial art descended from traditional swordsmanship (kenjutsu). Practitioners wear protective armor (bogu) and use bamboo swords (shinai) to engage in sparring and kata practice.
More than a sport, Kendo cultivates respect, discipline, perseverance, and strong character. It is practiced by people of all ages and walks of life, united by the shared pursuit of self-improvement through the sword.
The Sacramento Kendo Dojo welcomes practitioners of all ages and experience levels. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced kenshi, you will find a welcoming and rigorous environment to develop your practice.
